We have been loving our Disney + subscription since it's launch this spring and one of the things we have been enjoying are some of the less well known offerings for history lovers. Read on to find out our picks if you love history or are wanting to instil a love of history in your family.
We are gigantic history buffs and one of the things we weren't expecting was how much good history content there is on Disney+. Below we will run down our current top 5 picks on Disney + today.
5. Origins
This series takes one thread and pulls it through the timeline from the start to its use in the modern world. For example, the first episode traces man's use of fire from the beginnings of humanity, through the Bronze Age, Ancient China, the great Fire of London and up to it's use in the space program today. Other episodes look at the development of medicine, money and communication. If you enjoy seeing the big picture and how these ideas are connected through time, this is a series that you will enjoy.
4. Titanic 20 Years Later
The sinking of the Titanic is one of the historical events that captured the interest of the world and when the Ballard Expedition discovered the final resting place of the Titanic in 1985 the world's interest was captured once again. This special hosted by James Cameron looks at how the decisions he made when he created the movie Titanic compare to the new research that has been done on the Titanic since then. We are not immune to the lure of the Titanic and had to watch this special. Our favourite is the underwater footage of the Titanic.
3.Stonehenge Decoded
Stonehenge is another topic that captures the imagination. Tis is probably one of the world's most famous monuments that is still shrouded in mystery. This special looks at the neolithic site discovered in Ireland and new discoveries around the Stonehenge site influence and change our understanding of Stonehenge. We really can't get enough shows on the history and mystery of Stonehenge.
2. Imagineering
As both history lover and Disney lovers it should be no surprise that we love this series. Imagineering is the story of Disney Imagineers and the development of the Disney Parks. We can't get enough of vintage Disneyland footage so the first episode had us hooked. If you love Disney and haven't watched this series yet, what are you waiting for?
1. Lost Cities
This is easily one of our favourite series on Disney +. In this series Albert Lin travels the world in search of places that have been hidden by the sands of time. He uses a mixture of archeology, and technology to search for the remnants of once great civilizations. Personal favourite episodes are the ones et in Peru and Micronesia. All of this is combined with the beautiful video footage that National Geographic is known for. We can't recommend this one highly enough.
We certainly hope that we will continue to see more great history content on Disney +, in particular we are going to keep our fingers crossed that there will be a second season of Lost Cities. If you have watched any of these or have other suggestions, please drop us a message in the comments below.
